PHOTOS thanks to Rowing NZ. Jeff Francis Jeff 3rd from left in both.

Francis Silver at the 2013 Under 23 World Rowing Champs...

Switzerland had the fastest time coming through from yesterday’s semifinal. But semifinal times were closely packed and this was shaping up to be an incredibly tight race. It was the reigning World Champions, Ukraine, that jumped out first rating a huge 50 strokes per minute. But their lead didn’t last long. Roeoesli, Maillefer, Stahlberg and Delarze of Switzerland had pushed ahead and, rating 35, it looked like they planned to dominate for the entire race.
Going through the middle of the race Switzerland had earned a handy two second margin over Germany who had pushed into second as Ukraine appeared to run out of steam. Then New Zealand started to come back from a very slow start. Had the New Zealanders stuttered at the start, or was this a tactic? A huge piece by New Zealand, rating 39, in the third 500 enabled them to close the gap on the Swiss. Could Switzerland hold on?
The race had become all about Switzerland and New Zealand. Both boats charged for the line. Switzerland were at 40, New Zealand at 40. Then New Zealand went to 45. The line got closer. The winner was decided by the final surge. Switzerland had done it. Gold to Switzerland, silver to New Zealand and Germany took the bronze.
The Swiss rowed to a time just four seconds outside of the under-23 World Best Time.
The crew from Switzerland took the gold in 5:43.60, New Zealand was close behind in 5:44.20, and the German’s claimed the bronze.

Heat Results of the 2013 U23 World Rowing Champs

Rotorua rowers Claudia Hyde and Jeff Francis are racing at the 2013 World Under 23 Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria.

Jeff Francis should be feeling confident of an A Final after placing second in his Men’s Quad Heat in a time of 5:46.60.

He is seated in sight of a medal at the 4th overall fastest time of the three heats and 17 crews.

His New Zealand Men’s Quad will join the 5 fastest boats; Switzerland, France, Romania, Germany and Poland from the heats in the Semi Finals. Hyde , 4th in her heat, with the 5th fastest time of the two Heats, has a very good chance for a medal.

She goes to repechage. It is Rowing New Zealand’s policy to send athletes able to place in the first 6, to international regattas.

Rotorua Rowing Club’s Jeff Francis is into the A Final tomorrow at 2.30am  (NZ TIME) for the Under 23 World Rowing Champs in Trakai, Lithuania.
From 19 Men’s Quad crews, Jeff’s is in the top 6 in the world, which will include ….
France, Italy, Australia, Czech Rep and Ukraine.
Looking at the times I think there might be a good race for medals between France,Italy, Australia and New Zealand, with a show by Ukraine in the first quarter. It will be tough for Bronze. Let’s hope that fight will be between France and Australia, leaving our boat to battle the Italians for Gold.
New Zealand came 1st in their heat and third in their semi. France started badly in their heat but made it up to finish first and they took their semi final from start to finish, leaving NZ in third, Australia in second.
Italy seems to be fast in starts and endurance; winning both their heat and semi.Australia took the lead in their heat as did the Czech Rep, but Ukraine beat the Czech Rep boat in their semi, and New Zealand beat the Ukraine boat in their heat.

The men's quadruple scull of Giacomo Thomas, Jeffrey Francis, Jonathan Wright and Karl Manson enjoyed a race long battle with the Ukraine as both crews pulled clear of Norway, Switzerland and the USA to secure the automatic semi-final qualifying spots. The Kiwi crew were almost two seconds to the good at the finish line.

Henley, then the worlds
Jeff Francis, a RRC (Rotorua Rowing Club) member is in the ‘final countdown’ of his rowing year. The NZ Men’s Quad blocked out the Norwegians at the Royal Henley Regatta on the Thames, last night, our time, and will be looking to win the Queen Mother Challenge Cup, the Men’s Quad event..
“Well our first race is over and done with.” said Jeff Francis last night  “We won, so that is a nice start to our overseas campaign. It was a very tough race with a strong head wind and the quad had to row into the current. We managed to hold a boat length over the Norwegians most of the way and increased it to a boat length and a half over the line. “ said Francis. “Tomorrow we race the Australians in the semi-final.  I’m looking forward to it.”
Henley is a club regatta, albeit a very prestigious one – so they don’t have National crews competing as such. The course is 2,112 metres, upstream , usually into a headwind , so the race takes quite a bit longer than usual. Crews from Australia, Holland, Norway and Canada , along with Denmark, Ireland and the London Rowing Club, are on the Men’s Quad start list and it looks to be a full international level event this year.
The regatta format is match racing – a very simple concept –if you win you progress to the next round – lose, & you’re out. There is only 1 winner ” Rob Francis , Jeff’s Dad and former Rotorua Rowing Coach said.
Rowing NZ has a banner under which our National rowers compete in order to meet the club criteria – called Waiariki Rowing club (no connection with the Polytech) .The crew now progress to the next round - against the Australian men’s U23 Quad, win this & they’re in the final.
“Whilst they have trained in NZ in Fillipi boats, they are using an Empacher “ said Francis senior ”It has taken a quite a few rows to set the boat up the way they like it, “ he added “but they have got there and he said it is starting to give them the speed that they are looking for”
After Henley they travel to Trakei in Lithuania, to be joined by the rest of the NZ team, for the 2012 World Under 23 Rowing Championships. Heats, start on the 11th July. Jeff is the first male rower from the Rotorua Rowing Club, to compete in a World Rowing Under 23 event.  The next step is the Elite NZ Rowing Team and the next Olympics in Rio, 2016.

Row that boat
Former John Paul College student, Jeff Francis, is training towards the Under 23 World Rowing Championships, in Lithuania in July, and he is happy training is “going really well”.
His schedule is rigorous, but he looked terrific when I called by Lake Karapiro Rowing NZ Elite Training Centre on Friday.
Rowing is all there is at the moment. Jeff is either about to go ‘on- water ‘or about to go ‘off- water’.He trains on Lake Karapiro twice a day, at least 3 times a week, in his Men’s Quad, alternating with time trials. Then he adds in, weights programmes, off- water.
Rowing NZ monitors the crew’s speed over varying distances, week by week, and prepares ‘prognostics’. These time trials tell the Rowing New Zealand coaches whether the crews are performing, according to their progress plans and nearing their projected world class race times.
The crews are on a programme which intensifies as time goes by. Once the boat and its crew are performing as a perfect rowing machine, the four scullers will be doing more speed work, all the while, making sure they stay in perfect health.

Bronze for Julia at the U23 World Rowing

Rotorua’s Julia Edward and crew mate Alyce Pulford ploughed through the competition to gain a bronze medal in the final of the Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls  at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, Sunday .

A low start hampered Julia Edward and Alyce Pulford in a race against all the top rowing nations and up and coming Olympic class lightweight boats. The Kiwi girls were in the pack but only fourth at the first marker. They remained there at the half way point, rowing through the fading Germans to get themselves into the medals in the third quarter and in the last five hundred metres secured their bronze medal by pulling away from the Dutch.  There was nothing they could do about the leaders, however, with the eventual winners Greece and the runners up Spain, a few seconds ahead of them.

The women's eight took a silver medal, adding to Saturday's silver medal that lightweight pair of Curtis Rapley and Armin Svboda won.

Two silvers and a bronze were a solid result for the NZ team in another very busy and competitive regatta.

Laura Fischer misses Bronze by less than a second

With a  0:83 of a second distance behind Australia, at the finish line, the New Zealand Women’s Quad’s bold effort did not, unfortunately, gain them a medal.

Finishing 4th in a time of 6:31.71 in a world event is a success in itself albeit disappointing for the crew of Kate Reymer, Olivia Loe, Lucy Spoors

and Rotorua’s Laura Fischer.

Rowing New Zealand expects a 1st to 6th place in a world event and Laura certainly accomplished that. With Germany taking Gold and Italy the Silver, Laura was in fine company.
