1000m Novices, Masters and Corpor8 Regatta OCTOBER 19

Rowing Crews from Rotorua, Tauranga , Whakatane and Bay of Plenty Coast Rowing Clubs enjoyed an early season regatta in light winds and clear weather at the Blue Lake. Traditionally this Rotorua regatta gives Novices and Master rowers racing practice at the shorter 1000 metres length , in preparation for the 2 kilometer races they will compete in at Lake Karapiro from mid November. For the last few seasons Rotorua Rowing Club has

included 500 metre races for corporate teams of coxed eight oars.

The corporate crews receive 16 training sessions on water plus erging and this year Rotorua’s entry; Ngongotaha Medical Centre’ came 2^nd in the overall plate final.

RESULTS

CORPORATE COXED EIGHT ‘Vision Software’ Tauranga won the plate final and the overall trophy was won by the ‘Police Team’ - Tauranga. The Rotorua Team; ‘Ngotontaha Medical Centre’ was placed second in the plate final

The goal…to make it to the other end…

A very successful Rotorua 1000m Novices and 500m Corporate Regatta was held at the Blue Lake on Sunday 28th in perfect racing conditions. There was a good turnout of crews from the BOP Rowing Clubs. Bay Coast, Tauranga and Whakatane clubs joined the Rotorua rowers for 6 hours of competition.

The purpose of the regatta said Rotorua Rowing Club Head Coach Alastair Riddle was“to give senior rowers an early hit out and give the novices some early racing experiences ”The Rotorua Rowing Club (RRC) rowers will forge on towards the more formal events at Lake Karapiro.

A highlight of the regatta were the 8 heats of Corporate rowing coxed eight oars. The overall winner was ‘ The Council Oars’( Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Whakatane), with rowers-up in 2^nd place;‘Kidz in Boatz’( CYFS Tauranga) and in 3^rdplace; ‘Forest Oars’(Rayonier NZ Ltd, Tauranga) . “Early heats were pretty shaky but they improved with every race“ said Coach Riddle.“The regatta gave the rowers the chance to try their new skills.”

The corporate rowers came from Whakatane, Rotorua and Tauranga. They worked hard, training on water in skiffs and off water on ERGs for 8 weeks.The final was a hotly contested event with a very close race and plenty of intensity from the imaginatively named crews;

Rotorua coaches were very pleased with their Novice, Masters and Corporate crews efforts and the way they all worked together loading and unloading trailers.“It was a good start to the season.“ said Coach Riddle.

Rotorua Rowing Club's regatta season off to a bumpy start….

Rotorua Rowing Club held its 1000m Blue Lake Novice and Masters Regatta recently and for the first time RRC added a Corporate event.

“ Racing today was great but challenging for the novice rowers. Our first corporate rowing events, was a great inclusion and thoroughly enjoyed by all.”

Glen Reichardt, President of Rotorua Rowing Club said.

The blustery wind was sometimes hitting the big skiffs side- on, making it incredibly difficult for these Corporate ‘novvies’ to stay on a straight course .The crews of 8 plus coxswain were entered by local Bay of Plenty businesses and had two trainings a week for 8 weeks to learn how to row well enough, to have four 500m races in a coxed eight oared skiff.

Rotorua prepared 2 teams for the regatta held annually on the Blue Lake. Rotorua’s ‘The Shed’ crew, 2^nd over all, were made up of staff from The Shed Restaurant and Bar and

Rotorua’s 2^nd crew-‘The Scioneers’, from SCION,5^th overall; both raced against 4 crews from around the Bay of Plenty; ‘Blues Crew ’(The NZ Police team from Tauranga), ‘Team TWK ’(Te Whanau Kotahi),‘Craig’s Investment ’ and ‘Oarsum Seeka ’.

Our new Corporate rowers had “Lots of fun and satisfaction as they all got smoother and better at racing as the day went on. Congratulations to all participants on your achievement and attitudes - the club have enjoyed hosting you.” Said Alastair Riddle , Head of Coaching Rotorua Rowing Club.

Rotorua Rowing Club’s more experienced Master rowers were more at ease in the conditions. The Masters ; Tom Clark, Rob Prebble, Steve Donn, Dave Crow (C) won their Coxless Quad Scull Division 2 and the Rotorua schools crews enjoyed a great day.

“The mix of a brisk South Easterly wind and the Blue Lake made for a rough first regatta “ said Alastair “and a good blowout for all though after six months of good training, and good preparation for the more serious regattas held over the summer. Experienced rowers performed well and all the novice rowers had their first taste of competition and

acquitted themselves well in quads and some wobbly doubles.”

Stacey Tamlin (coxn),Holly Johnson, Mea Hunter, Anna Wallace, Angela O'Sullivan were happy with their quad race.It ‘s a boost having a success in the very first regatta of their rowing careers. The school novices spend a lot of time training before this shorter course regatta. The School rowers compete on longer 1000m course. As the regatta season proceeds the girls will race on a 2000m course at Lake Karapiro. With the World Rowing Championships over; ‘Karapiro’ will be settling back into its regular format of regattas with a brand new tower beside the finish line built specially for the ‘Worlds’ ready for use.
