Rotorua Rowing Club's regatta season off to a bumpy start….

Rotorua Rowing Club held its 1000m Blue Lake Novice and Masters Regatta recently and for the first time RRC added a Corporate event.

“ Racing today was great but challenging for the novice rowers. Our first corporate rowing events, was a great inclusion and thoroughly enjoyed by all.”

Glen Reichardt, President of Rotorua Rowing Club said.

The blustery wind was sometimes hitting the big skiffs side- on, making it incredibly difficult for these Corporate ‘novvies’ to stay on a straight course .The crews of 8 plus coxswain were entered by local Bay of Plenty businesses and had two trainings a week for 8 weeks to learn how to row well enough, to have four 500m races in a coxed eight oared skiff.

Rotorua prepared 2 teams for the regatta held annually on the Blue Lake. Rotorua’s ‘The Shed’ crew, 2^nd over all, were made up of staff from The Shed Restaurant and Bar and

Rotorua’s 2^nd crew-‘The Scioneers’, from SCION,5^th overall; both raced against 4 crews from around the Bay of Plenty; ‘Blues Crew ’(The NZ Police team from Tauranga), ‘Team TWK ’(Te Whanau Kotahi),‘Craig’s Investment ’ and ‘Oarsum Seeka ’.

Our new Corporate rowers had “Lots of fun and satisfaction as they all got smoother and better at racing as the day went on. Congratulations to all participants on your achievement and attitudes - the club have enjoyed hosting you.” Said Alastair Riddle , Head of Coaching Rotorua Rowing Club.

Rotorua Rowing Club’s more experienced Master rowers were more at ease in the conditions. The Masters ; Tom Clark, Rob Prebble, Steve Donn, Dave Crow (C) won their Coxless Quad Scull Division 2 and the Rotorua schools crews enjoyed a great day.

“The mix of a brisk South Easterly wind and the Blue Lake made for a rough first regatta “ said Alastair “and a good blowout for all though after six months of good training, and good preparation for the more serious regattas held over the summer. Experienced rowers performed well and all the novice rowers had their first taste of competition and

acquitted themselves well in quads and some wobbly doubles.”

Stacey Tamlin (coxn),Holly Johnson, Mea Hunter, Anna Wallace, Angela O'Sullivan were happy with their quad race.It ‘s a boost having a success in the very first regatta of their rowing careers. The school novices spend a lot of time training before this shorter course regatta. The School rowers compete on longer 1000m course. As the regatta season proceeds the girls will race on a 2000m course at Lake Karapiro. With the World Rowing Championships over; ‘Karapiro’ will be settling back into its regular format of regattas with a brand new tower beside the finish line built specially for the ‘Worlds’ ready for use.
