Julia Edward wins Bronze at 2013 World Cup III

Rotorua Rowing Club’s Julia Edward and her rowing partner Lucy Strack have won Bronze at the 2013 World rowing Cup III, in Lucerne , Switzerland over the weekend. There was a fight at the line for third position and  Edward and Strack took it from Germany by 0.09 of a second.

A year ago on the Rotsee waters at Lucerne ,Edward was part of the New Zealand lightweight women’s double that set a World Best Time with then partner Louise Ayling. This record still remains.

The winners of the event, Italians Milani and Sancassani have both been rowing for two decades and until 2012 Sancassani was rowing at heavyweight grade.

Edward and Strack first teamed up for the Under 21 Rowing Championships and then again for the 2010 World Championships held at Karapiro. “We want to make our combination dominant and make sure we’re in the boat for the next 3 years buildup for Rio” Edward told worldrowing.com.

The girls are coached by New Zealand’s world famous DickTonks, and have definitely gained by his coaching. The girls do the kilometres in training to get them through the middle 1000m, with an advantage in the last 500metres. This helps avoid a late sprint to finish at the end of a strenuous 2 kilometres race. In rowing it is psychologically easier to be in the front and watch your competition behind you.

Edward said to Worldrowing.com “For the last four years we have been building the lightweight squad in New Zealand. We have got some good girls coming through. So they keep us on our toes.”

World Rowing.com talked to Julia Edward on YouTube; “ The reason we work so well” said Edward“is that we tell each other then and there…we’re always on the same page.”

Edward and Strack will be home on the 17th to train for the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Korea.

John Howard Regatta (Leg1) rowed on Lake Rotorua …
This weekend saw the 1st leg of the John Howard Rowing Regatta raced on Lake Rotorua. Rotorua came first with 57 points, Bay Coast Rowing Club 56 points, Gisborne Rowing Club 8 points over the two days of racing.
This was the first time racing had occurred in the sport of rowing on Lake Rotorua since the days of the Rotorua Carnival which stated in 1903 and ended sometime after 1934. Later rowing regattas moved to the Blue Lake and racing ceased on Lake Rotorua until this weekend.
Today’s crews came from Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club, Bay Coast Rowing Club, Gisborne Rowing Club and the newly reborn Taupo Rowing Club joining with Rotorua Rowing Club (RRC) to race the 2km course, set with the finish line at the end of Beaumont’s Road, Ngongotaha.
The Willowhaven Holiday Camp provided a perfect squad centre for all the skiffs and crews and also hosted many rowers from out of town.
A win all round! The 2nd Leg of this regatta will be held late August.
The RRC trains their crews on Lake Rotorua every day but now there will hopefully be further regattas on Lake Rotorua to add to the existing two RRC hosted annual rowing regattas held on the Blue Lake;the ‘Corpor8’, Masters and Novices regatta at the end of October and the ‘Blue Lake Regatta’ co-hosted with the Whakatane Rowing Club held on Wellington Anniversary weekend in January.

History Of Rowing In Rotorua…

Rowing had been elevated to an internationally competitive sport by 1896 when it was entered for the Athens Olympics. Unfortunately due to high winds rowing did not occur and the sport had to wait for the Paris Olympics in 1900 to compete.

Two and a half years later the Rotorua Carnival began on the 24th February 1903 and was a great success for locals, local businesses, visitors and tourists combined.

Ashburton Guardian, Volume XXI, Issue 5898, 25 February 1903, Page 2

“Rotorua was en fete today for the commencement of the first annual carnival. There were 2000 visitors and the Carnival opened with a rowing regatta on the lake.”

There were tennis and bowling tournaments, swimming events, bands playing in the fairy-lamped Sanitorium Grounds and a Masked Ball. There was considerable interest in the Sailing, Gig (Lifeguard boats) racing and Maori War Canoe racing; Crews came from Waikato and surrounding districts. On Opening Day the first event was a canoe parade, in which the large canoes took part. A highlight being the canoe Moungakawa followed by Te Iroiro, the big canoe dug up after thirty years under Rotoiti, and the Waikato’s racing canoe Whawhakia. The Carnival concluded on March 3rd with the final of the Gentlemen’s Doubles in the Tennis Tournament.

By 1904 Messrs John Dewar and Sons Limited, of Perth and London, (the Dewar’s Whisky Company) had gifted a splendid trophy called the “Dewar’s Shield’ to be awarded to the novice winners of the ‘Maiden Fours Oarsmen’ at the annual ‘Rotorua Carnival  Regatta’, nowadays awarded to the overall points winning club at the ‘Blue Lake Regatta’.

Rotorua Regatta: Auckland Rowing Association, together with the Rotorua Advancement Committee will hold a regatta on January 13, 1934 at Ohinemutu on Lake Rotorua. Donations totaled 150 pounds. Held under control of the Auckland Rowing Association. Special trains will run from Auckland, Wellington and Wanganui”.

Julia Edward 3rd in the Holland Beker

Rotorua’s Olympic rower Julia Edward  gained the Bronze medal at the Holland Becker International Regatta in Amsterdam. Edward and crewmate Lucy Strack  rowed heavyweight double sculls instead of their usual lightweight. We raced heavy weight at this event to get a little more competition! “ said Edward  ” we used the predominant tail wind at the Amsterdam Bosbaan rowing course to our advantage.” The Rowing New Zealand Women’s Double crew of Zoe Stevenson and Fiona Bourke won in a time of 06:46.91 minutes. Canada came in second in a time of 06:54.48 minutes and Julia Edward and Lucy Strack came third, one second behind Canada in the time of 06:55.48 minutes. The Holland Beker Regatta started from 1886 as a men's rowing challenge in the single scull. Over the years the evolved to become a classic on the rowing calendar.
