Edward and Francis selected to trial for elite/U23 squad
Following some great results at the NZ Championships over the weekend, the selectors have chosen two Rotorua Rowing Club rowers to trial for selection into either the Under 23 NZ Team going to the 2012 U23 World Rowing Championships in Trakai, Lithuania from the 11th of July to the 15th of July or the 2012 World Rowing Championships which will be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria between August 15th and August 19th.
Both Julia Edward, rowing under RRC colours for the Waikato Regional Performance Centre (WRPC) and Jeff Francis (RRC, WRPC) are U23 so are theoretically suitable for selection into both regattas.
Elite and U23 Trialists
The Waikato RPC have 27 athletes selected for the Elite and U23 trials which begin on Saturday 25 February - 2 March. The athletes will be put through their paces with ergometer tests and on water seat racing. At the completion of the trials the NZ crews for the 2012 London Olympics and the U23 World Championships will be named. Edwards races to the top….
Rotorua rowing hit a high today, with Julia Edward winning another yellow coat, a reward for a Gold medal in the Premier Women’s Single Sculls event, at the 2012 New Zealand Rowing Championships, held on Lake Karapiro this week.
Julia ,a sculler, uses 2 oars, as opposed to a rower who uses one. She is a ‘lightweight’ and must always remain beneath 57 kilos. It was a hard fought race and Edward deserved her win, taking first place from her friend and former racing partner Lucy Strack, in the last 50m.
Edward also took the Bronze in the Women’s Premier Double Scull event this afternoon, after a photo finish.
To ‘medal’ in a heavyweight event, is difficult for a lightweight rower, as their weight is usually proportionate to their body shape and theoretically they will have a shorter ‘reach’ than a heavyweight woman sculler.
The heavyweight rowers have no weight limits and are generally proportionately taller.
So our Julia is ‘performing well above her weight’, literally. Edward was the only ‘lightweight’ in the medals.
Julia is at least half a head shorter than her doubles partner; Genevieve Armstrong , who is 180 cm tall and weighs 68kilos.
Julia tips the scales at around 51kilos and is near 167.5cms tall. The event winners; Anna Reymer (stroke) and Fiona Paterson, who row for the Central Regional Performance Centre were taller too. Reymer is 174cm tall and weighs in at 71kilos and Paterson is 182cm tall and weighs 81kilo.

Rotorua - in the medals at the 2011 Club Champs...
Rotorua’s senior, RPC and premier rowers gathered together a large medal haul this last weekend.“The women's lightweight single scull wasn't the cracker people were hoping for” said Rowing NZ spokesman Richard Gee,“with Southern Regional Performance Centre’s Lucy Strack dominating the race and looking just a tiny bit more pacey and powerful than her high quality rivals. World silver medallist Louise Ayling chased her hard, but had to settle for second ahead of Strack's current light double sculls partner Julia Edward.”
Ex -RGHS sculler and Halberg Finalist; Julia Edward emerged out of the fray with two Golds. One for Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls and one for Under 21 Double Sculls and a Bronze was her reward for her battle in the Lightweight Single Scull, with a time of 8:00.29mins.
“It's been a good week” said Edward ” with a third to Lucy Strack and Louise Ayling. The final was very competitive as women’s lightweight rowing gets stronger.”
Ex RLHS rower Laura Fischer , now rowing for the Waikato Regional Performance Centre, deserved her Gold in the Premier Women’s Coxless Quad Sculls and Bronze in the Premier Women’s Eight.
Bay of Plenty Academy Women’s scullers Claudia Hyde(JPC) and Tosca Wilson (Rotorua) won Gold in the Women’s Club Double Sculls and Bronze in the Women’s Club Coxless Quad Sculls.
Bay of Plenty Academy Men’s scullers Riordan Morrell (WHHS) and Nigel Van Den Akker were rewarded with a Gold for their Men’s Senior Coxless Quad Sculls.
Rotorua’s Jeff Francis, sculling for Waikato Performance Centre proved success comes from doing what he knows best ; won Bronze for Men’s Under 21 Double Sculls.
Ex RBHS rower Andrew Oliver, now rowing for Westend, took two Silvers for Men’s Senior Eight and Men’s Senior Pair and a Bronze for Men’s Senior Coxless Four.
Ex RBHS rower Thomas O’Donnell, now rowing for the Waikato Rowing Club took away a Silver for Men’s Senior Double Scull and a Bronze for Men’s Senior Coxless Quad Sculls.
