John Paul College students; Andre Lelievre and Connor Broughton had a tough battle to finish first in the Boys Under 18 (Novice) Double Sculls,at the Mighty River Junior Regatta at Karapiro on Sunday.Andre underwent surgery two weeks ago (just before the North Island Rowing Clubs Championships), and
it was anyone’s guess.
“It was great to see the boys bounce back, not hit anyone at the start, then scull well and win the event.“ said their coach Harry Ashby.
On the pontoon after their jubilant win, when asked if they had expected it,Connor Broughton in Stroke seat responded “We hoped so.”
With a laugh Andre Lelievre added “It was a long time coming, we’d mucked up some races.”
Connor Broughton also placed third in the Lightweight Boys Under 18 crew with Taylor Boyce.
“They are a new combination showing lots of promise” said Coach Ashby .
All in all Rotorua Rowing Club finished with 3 firsts, 3 seconds and 1 third.

School rowing crews prep for the big ‘exam’.

The school rowing season’s well under way with the Mighty River Power Junior Regatta last weekend.

“This regatta, for us, is to sort out the most competitive combinations to enter in the North Island secondary schools regatta”said Head Coach Alastair Riddle.

There were favourable results in the Under 18, and Under 16 age groups. With two firsts, 3 seconds and 2 thirds.

The most important school regattas are the 2012 North Island Secondary School Rowing Champs(NISS) mid- March and the2012 New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Champs (NZSS or ‘Maadi’) , at the end of March, which is the final ‘exam’for the rowing ‘class of 2012’, finishing the season for the year.

“ Training has been stepped up over the last few weeks “ said Rotorua Rowing Club President , Glen Reichardt “with pressure on all rowers to attain their full potential. “

At both the NISS and ‘Maadi’ regattas, rowers will be representing their school first and Rotorua Rowing Club second.Glen Reichardt had this to say to crews;

“You have done the club proud over the season and I know you will continue this for your schools. Go for it.”

School rowing at the sharp end of the season...

“The Mighty River Power Junior regatta last weekend was a chance to try out all our school combinations to work out the best entries for the big regattas coming up. “ Alastair Riddle (RRC Head Coach).Rotorua Rowing Club entered 58 crews and of these, 22 crews made 'A' finals and a further 12 made 'B' finals.

“Two weeks now until the North Island Secondary Schools regatta when all coaches will finally reveal their best combinations, so the pressure's on and we have to make the most of every training - there are not many left .At this stage of the game every little thing counts - so eat and drink right, get a good 8 hours sleep, don't go skydiving or downhill racing on your mountain bike, running a half marathon in the week before the regatta - Rowing takes precedence at this final month of our season. Follow your coaches instructions for off-water training as we cut the work back significantly just before each of these two regattas... All the best “Alastair Riddle (RRC Head Coach)
