Getting better every race......

Rotorua Rowing Club had a successful regatta at Karapiro over the weekend and the school rowers enjoyed seeing how they measured up, as the rowing season heads towards the North Island Secondary Rowing Champs, on March 9th and the NZ Secondary School Rowing Champs (aka ‘Maadi’) on March 26th.

The Girls U16 Quad Sculls, won their final , with crew; Olivia Ashby, Grace Eriksen, Helen Payne, Georgina Hyde, Delaney Phillips (cox) and third place was taken by crew; Stacey Tamblin (stroke) , Emma Cronshaw-Hunt, Alice West ,Hannah Cox, Tara Moberly (cox). Both crews are coached by Chris Pearson.

The first and third places were excellent results for both the Under 16 Girls Quads, after being a little off the pace in earlier regattas. The predominantly John Paul crew that won, were back a bit after 500 meters, but had a very strong second quarter to lead at the 1000 meter mark and were never seriously challenged.” Coach Pearson said “ The Western heights girls (in third)also had a strong race but the effort of battling the wind and rough water in the outer lane told over the last quarter of the race. “

Another of Chris Pearson’s crews placed  3rd in the Girls U18 Double sculls.

“Natalie Hill and Olivia Ashby have continued on from their bronze medal at the North Island Club Champs in the under 19 double and a win the previous week at the Blue Lake Regatta. “ said Pearson ”They are a new combination this year and are getting better each race. “

Natalie Hill, also placed 3rd in the Girls U18 single sculls (coached by Glen Reichardt).

The boys crew; Stephen Wright (stroke), Lewis Morrell, Mathew Bennett ,Conner Spackman and Emily Cooper (cox), coached by Glen Reichardt took a 2nd in the Men’s Novice Coxed Four and the crew of ; Bradley Grant (stroke), Kelsey Crew, Matthew Cooper and Nathan Toma placed 3rd in the  Men’s Club Coxless Quad.

Rotorua’s High Performance rowers who row for the Waikato Regional Performance Centre; Jeff Francis, Julia Edward, Claudia Hyde and Laura Fischer, together, bagged three 2nds and two 3rds working hard, preparing for the NZ Rowing Champs on the 13th of February  . The highlights were Laura Fischer’s 2nd in the Premier Women’s Coxless Four, Claudia Hyde’s 3rd in the Women’s Premier Quad and Julia Edward’s 3rd in the Women’s Premier Quad.
