It’s usually the cox who goes for a swim after an 8 wins. A dry coxswain-Tara Moberly, relishes the win of the MC8+,
as the rowers enjoy a cool down in Lake Karapiro.

Rotorua rowing on 8 cylinders....
Rotorua Rowing Club attended the recent Te Awamutu Regatta at Karapiro and with a win in the Men’s Premier 8+ by Jeffrey Francis, the Men’s Club eight, and a win in the Women’s Novice eight , it promises to provide ongoing excitement in the coxed eight event during this rowing season.
Jeffrey Francis rows for Rotorua as part of the Waikato Regional Performance Centre with a Waikato/BOP crew.
The young schoolboy rowers in the Men’s Club 8+ were from 5 Rotorua schools. Coached by Alastair Riddle (Head Coach of RRC) and steered by cox; Tara Moberly from Rotorua Girls High School ; the rowers included Keegan Oxenham(RBHS),Scott Anderson (RLHS), Matthew Cooper (RBHS) Turei Crew(RBHS),Jakob Zohs (JPC) ,Kelsey Crew(RBHS),Hugh Speirs (WHHS),Callum Taft (JPC).
The winning schoolgirl rowers in the WN8+ were Georgina Hyde(JPC),Anna Wallace RLHS, Mea Hunter (WHHS), Zoe Jans(WHHS), Stacy Tamlin(WHHS), Angela O'Sullivan(JPC), Holly Johnston(JPC), Alice West(WHHS), and cox;Willow Sperry(JPC).
“ it was a low key introduction to 2km racing for Rotorua Rowing Clubs novice crews” commented Alastair Riddle, Head Coach.
“ They and the senior rowers had good regattas with their solid winter / spring training programs paying dividends.”
Rotorua Boys High School has been consistent in the Men’s Club coxed eight oar from 2006, winning Gold at the North Island Club Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The RBHS rowers have in their sights the hope of repeating the ‘old boys’ exploits .
John Paul College (with RBHS) have also been in the 8’s medals - rewarded with a Bronze at the 2009 North Island Club champs in the Senior Men’s coxed eight and Rotorua Girls High School (also with RBHS), won the Mixed Club Eight at the 2007 Rotorua Blue Lake Dewar’s Shield Regatta .
This year ,Rotorua Boys High School rowers do not number enough to row a school eight to victory. The dark navy RBHS ‘Raukura’ eight skiff, which is embellished with the names of past medalists, will stay on the racks, but with the North Island Club and the NZ Club Championship regattas in the early months of 2011, Rotorua is hoping for success for the Rotorua club eights.
The winning 2 eights were 2 of a total of 7 wins on the day and Rotorua made 6 second places; including the Men’s Novice 8+ and 4 third places at the Te Awamutu Regatta
The first of the big Karapiro events runs this weekend with most North Island clubs and National and Regional Performance Centre squads attending.
