Great effort at Maadi 2013
Rotorua high school crews took to the podium for three gold medals, and one Bronze at the AON 2013 Maadi Cup this weekend.
15 year old Andre Le Lievre and Conner Broughton from John Paul College, flew past St Bede’s College from Christchurch, with a canvas to spare, in the last six metres, to become Boys Under 18 Novice Double Sculls New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Champions, in a time of 7 minutes, 3.78 seconds.
“ It was so good to get it under our belts-there was a lot on the line,” said Broughton “we trained so hard.”
“That was our hardest race” said Le Lievre. “It was close, but we were quietly confident.”
Le Lievre and Broughton are eligible to enter Under 15 events and were in the company of 16 and 17 year old scullers in their race.
Coach Harry Ashby was jubilant. “They raced to plan and they sculled very well” he said. “I was confident that when they came under attack from St Bede’s if they kept their cool, they could finish first.”
Rotorua’s Head of Coaching Alastair Riddle believes the young boys crew have a lot of potential. “They have a nice feel for the water”.
Andre Le Lievre’s mum, Lyn, was so nervous, she spent the race pacing in circles.“I couldn’t watch it“ she said ”I’ll have to watch the video”
The senior Western Heights High School girls of Alice West (stroke), Olivia Ashby, Hannah Cox, Stacey Tamblin and Phoebe Johnston(cox) won the U17 coxed quad crossing the line in a photo finish to claim the Trudy Keys Cup.
The Rotorua crew were third at the 1750m mark and made a tremendous effort to claim their gold medal.
“I told the crew that we had 400 meters to go,” said coxswain Phoebe Johnston ”if they wanted to win they had to go now and they did.”
At the 1750m mark the Rotorua crew was third behind rivals Rangi Ruru Girls School from Christchurch and Wanganui High School. The WHHS girls powered past the competition, to take gold in a time of 7 minutes, 24.86 seconds. Rangi Ruru Girls, close on their heels- a mere 0.13 seconds behind, were delegated to silver.
“Races don’t come any closer harder or closer than that.” said coach Chris Pearson “ It just came down to the surge of the boats at the finish.”
The girls knew beforehand that it was probably going to come down to a battle between themselves and Rangi Ruru Girls School.
“We had planned to be ahead well before the 1500 meter mark” said Pearson. When that didn’t happen, the determined crew kept the pressure on.
“Staying calm when things weren’t going according to plan, and having the faith in each other to give it everything they had, won them the race” said Pearson.
The Boys Under 17 Coxed Four Oar was won by Western Heights High School crew; Lewis Morrell (stroke),Bradley Grant, Stephen Wright, Conner Spackman and Keely Gage (cox) in a time of 6minutes, 35.95 seconds. Coached by Glen Reichardt and Alistair Riddle, the crew took the silver medal at Maadi last year in the Boys U18 (Novice) Coxed Four in the time of 7minutes, 05.52 seconds .Their goal will be to go for gold and the Springbok Shield, in the prestigious Under 18 Coxed four oar at Maadi 2014 in Twizel.
The Western Heights High School crew of Lewis Morrell and Bradley Grant, coached by Glen Reichardt and Alastair Riddle, placed third to take the bronze medal in the Boys Under 17 Double Sculls in a time of 7 minutes, 0.14 seconds. This disciplined and hard working senior boys crew will find what is needed to be on the podium next year and gold will be the only colour in their sights for the Boys Under 18 Double Sculls.
