Riordan Morrell and Claudia Hyde trial for the 2011 Junior squad
Rotorua rowers; Riordan Morrell, Western Heights High School and Claudia Hyde, John Paul College will trial for the Under 19 squad going to the 2011 Junior World Championships at Eton, England, in August. The trials, lasting a week , from the 18th April , will be held at the Rowing New Zealand Karapiro Training Centre.
Last year Nigel Van Den Akker took 6th place in the coxed four and has some advice to both trialists - "Never assume that the selectors have stopped looking at you because they never stop.” Van den Akker warned ”Just keep training as usual ,up to trials, but don't over work yourself.” The ‘biggie’ he added is “ Just relax and enjoy and show them why it'd be stupid not to pick you because you both deserve to be there.”
In 2008, Rotorua’s Harry Simperingham, won an automatic trial with his 6:11.5 minutes Erg time and came 7th in the Junior Worlds in the coxed four. Rowing New Zealand pay particular attention to ‘Erg’ (or rowing machine ) times. Riordan gained an automatic trial by winning the Under 18 Boys Single sculls, at the Aon Maadi Cup, but his Erg time will be important to carry him through the week. Morrell, also known as ‘Big Red’, has a respectable ‘Erg’ time of 6:20.2 minutes. Morrell will be faster on the day, with adrenalin pumping and peak fitness.
Of the total 24 male trialists;12 are from the eight ‘Maadi Cup ‘eights’ which competed at the recent 2011 NZ Secondary School Rowing Championships at Karapiro. 4 Auckland Grammar School boys from the Gold medal -winning ‘eight’, 2 boys (1 rower and 1 cox) from the Silver medal-winning Christ’s College ‘eight’ and 1 boy from the Bronze medal-winning Westlake Boys High School ‘eight’ . Hamilton Boys High School who won the Maadi Cup 5 times in the last 7 years; provides 1 cox for trial, after finishing with 2 boats in 6th and 7th place, this year.
The Rowing New Zealand selectors will want a men’s ‘eight oar’, a ‘coxed four’ and possibly a ‘double scull’. They may look at Morrell for a ‘double’, but with his height and frame, there is a possibility of a seat in the ‘eight’ or ‘four’. “He's trialing for sculling and sweep oar, and can both move a boat, and lead,” said Rotorua Rowing Club’s Head Coach ; Alastair Riddle ” so he has a good chance to be part of a crew”
11 of the 30 Women trialists are from the A Final of the Under 18 eights; the ‘Levin Cup’ .7 rowers come from Waikato boats- 3 from winner Waikato Diocesan and 4 from 4th place getter; St Peters School .There may be a Women’s ‘eight’, but no doubt there will be a ‘coxed quad ’ and possibly a ‘double ’. Claudia Hyde, is a good choice for a place in a Women’s ‘quad’ or ‘double’. Hyde is very experienced and consistently hard-working sculler and will be in the eye of Rowing New Zealand for a long time yet.
Rotorua Rowing Club has no entries in the Rowing NZ High Performance Under 18 trials this year.
