On –water rowing trials begin for Junior Worlds
Claudia Hyde from John Paul College, started her trials on-water today, in an attempt to gain a place, in a crew
going to the 2011 Junior World Rowing Championships at Eton, England, in August.
Duncan By- de- Ley, rowing coach for Tauranga Boys College was at the Karapiro High Performance Centre pontoon, directing traffic on and off- water .
“There are some very impressive Erg times in the Girls trials. “ he said” One of the girl’s had an Erg of 7 minutes and mostly they’re 17”.
That is an exceptional Erg time for a girl in an under 19 category.
Claudia was racing in one of 2 double sculls, while the High Performance Rowing NZ selectors followed behind,
watching for the boat with the best speed and the scullers with the best technique. Claudia did one run down Lake Karapiro and then came onshore
to change out her rowing partner in 1 seat, before taking to the water again.
There is a possibility New Zealand will take a double, but usually Rowing NZ select women for an eight oar and a coxed quad.
In the recent past NZ has added a men’s double to the usual eight oar and coxed four.
This year if the women’s times are as good as Duncan says they are, maybe the women’s double will gain an entry.
‘Seat racing’ will continue for the rest of the week. We hope to see Riordan Morrell on water tomorrow
