New Zealand crews progressed to the main final of the men's coxed fours and the semi final of the men's lightweight fours in Brest, Belarusia today at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships, and the women's eight demonstrated medal potential with a second place finish in the warm-up race for their straight final.
The coxed four of Tufe Sele, Tobias Wehr-Candler, Adam Tripp, David Mabbott and Ivan Pavich made the championship final with a great start-to-finish victory that saw them get into their stride early on and establish a three second lead over Croatia at half way. With the first two qualifying for the main event and the rest heading into the B final, the Kiwi boys kept their handy lead in a reasonably close race over the second half. Their margin of victory was just under a second and a half at the line.
The mens lightweight four of Finian Scott, Curtis Rapley, Graham Oberlin-Brown and James Lassche qualified for the semi final in second place in their heat, after a good tussle with the Chilean four. The Kiwis led the first half but the Chileans came back strongly to move from third and take the lead by 1500 metres. All of the crews in the semis will be watching the British, who looked the most accomplished of all the boats in the three heats.
In the women's eight exhibition race - a prelude to an identical line up in the six boat final - the New Zealand girls showed they will be a serious threat for a medal with a great second place behind the USA but ahead of France, Germany, home nation Belarusia and the Canadians.
The ladies quadruple scull finished third in the heat but could only manage fifth in the repechage and will line up for the B final.

Three New Zealand crews - the men's double scull and women's lightweight double and single sculls - will progress straight to the semi finals after the first session of racing at the World Under 23 Rowing Championships in Brest, Belarusia - though we'll have to wait for more Kiwis to progress after bad weather stopped the rowing for much of the afternoon session.
Robbie and Karl Manson were untroubled in the first heat of the double sculls - the event in which Robbie is the world champion. They led all of the way in their heat and made the Semi with a four second victory ahead of the Ukranian double.
The women's lightweight double of Lucy Strack and Julia Edward won their heat to progress directly to the main smei finals, and were another crew to lead all the way. Even so, they were tracked closely by Germany throughout. Leah Stanley, daughter of rowing legend Mike Stanley, showed the family talent well with a solid second place in her first race in the women's lightweight single scull, a result that moves her directly into the semi finals.
The New Zealand coxed four didn't get the start it would have been looking for however. Third place in the heat for Tufi Sele, David Mabbott, existing champion Tobias Wehr-Candler, Adam Tripp and cox Ivan Pavich means they will have to progress through the regatta finals via the tougher repechage route. It was a close race however and the crew missed out by less than a second, so will be confident they can get the job done in the rep.
