The Bulldogs faced Columbia and Penn for the Blackwell Cup on Apr. 17 in Philadelphia. Last year, the Bulldogs won three out of four races at Columbia's Orchard Beach racecourse against the two Ivy opponents, but fell in the varsity eight to Columbia. In weather unfit for rowing, the Pennsylvania varsity heavyweight crew defeated crews from Yale and Columbia today to capture the Blackwell Cup, America's oldest cup regatta. The regatta was twice postponed.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Yale varsity took a 2.5 second win over Columbia on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River to reclaim the Blackwell Cup after a two-year hiatus. Yale also took wins in the second and third varsity eights and the four. The freshmen fell to Penn and Columbia.
The Yale varsity (3-1) took the premier event of the morning in a time of 5:41.3. Columbia finished second in 5:43.8 followed by Penn in 5:57.8.
The second varsity (3-1) followed that up with a win in 5:59.8. In second was Penn (6:09.4). Columbia rounded out the field in 6:10.0.
The third varsity (3-0) took a win over Penn, posting a 6:01.9 to the Quakers' 6:19.4.
The Yale 4V/2F four (2-0) also took a win over Penn (7:01.2 to 7:08.0)
Just falling short of a sweep, Rotorua’s Harry Simperingham and the Yale freshmen (2-2) came third to Penn (6:00.7) and Columbia (6:03.4) with a time of 6:15.0.
Next weekend the Bulldogs will host Princeton and Cornell at home for the Carnegie Cup.
