Battling it out right to the finish…Karapiro Club Regatta

Held: 30 November   Venue: Lake Karapiro (2k)

“The highlight from the Spring Regatta has to be Rotorua Rowing Club amassing the highest number of points” said Rotorua Rowing Club President James Boyce. ”And so far, we lead the

Karapiro Trophy.”This is a cumulative points trophy awarded at the end of the season. The Rotorua crews attended the KRI Club Regatta over the weekend which increased their points.

“Rotorua crews all performed well” said RRC Captain Glen Reichardt “and the senior boys in the U18 doubles performed exceptionally well which bodes well for a great season for them.”

“Crews battled it out right to the finish.” said Reichardt of the Morrell/Grant double and the Oxenham/Curtis double(photo above)“This is how we train and was good to see it put into practice.”

The changeable conditions made for choppy waters and slower times.“Unfortunately the regatta on the weekend was cut short due to the weather and so many did not get to row a single race.”

said RRC Captain Glen Reichardt.

Rotorua’s representative in the Waikato Regional Performance Centre; Claudia Hyde fought a strong head wind to place second in the Open Women’s Single.

Fastest boat at the regatta …KRI SPRING REGATTA

16.11.13

“It’s all pretty mixed up really – time trial and then heats based on times made for close racing, so really useful training. Standouts would be the U18 boys 8+  winning the A final, Connor and Andre, and U18

quad with Mania, Jordan and two U18 novice girls, Samantha and Gabrielle, and the U15 Boys Octuple who got significantly faster with every race during the day.”

Alastair Riddle, Head Coach

“The format of the Karapiro Spring Regatta makes it a lot of fun with the crews who entered last year wanting to enter again even in the middle of exams. With the time trial concept each crew had no idea what they would be up against.

Each crew new that no matter how they performed they would be against other rowers of the same ability, weather they be men or woman, boys or girls. The Rotorua crews took on the spirit of the regatta and tried their hardest to get

their best time to put them up the ladder as far as they could be. Some crews from other clubs just didn't get it and cruised down the course to get into a lower heat just to say they won, however I don't think they achieved

anything. The performance of all the Rotorua rowers have shown that we can look forward to an exciting season with many combinations looking good for the season to come.”

Glen Reichardt, Club Captain

Rotorua Rowing Club’s U18 Boys coxed eight oar crew of Conner McNamara-Spackman (stroke),Bradley Grant, Lewis Morrell,Tom

Coleman, Jonathan Curtis,Sean van Nieuwenhuizen,Cole Starling, Mathew Bennett and Keely Gage (cox) coached by Glen Reichardt  won the overall time trial from the entire field of 127 crews in a time of 6 minutes and 23 seconds and went on to win the regatta in the A Final.

Rotorua Rowing club (RRC) crews time-trialed for their place in the heats and semi-finals at the KRI Spring Regatta in the weekend. There was a constant stream of races.

The fastest eight oars, racing alongside the fastest octuples, coxed fours, coxless fours, coxed quad sculls and coxless quads, and the fastest double sculls racing the coxless pairs and single sculls down the 2000m course.

Into its second year now Karapiro Rowing’s new Spring Regatta format is very impressive for the onlooker. The U18 Boys coxed eight oar, were a standout for Head Coach Riddle, along with the double sculls crew of Connor Broughton and Andre Le Lievre , coached by Glen Reichardt, who took 3rd in the time trial of 21 double sculls in a time of 7 minutes and 12 seconds and won their Final. The U18 mixed quad with Mania Oxenham(stroke), Jordan McNamara-Spackman , U18 novice girls; Samantha Mathews and Gabrielle Grattan and cox;  Tyla Jansen  van Nieuwenhuizen coached by Emma-Jane Weller, placed an impressive eight in a time of 7min 21 secs in their time trial of 47 quad scull crews. The Boys U15 Octuple crew of Liam Waites (stroke), Callum August, Cameron Bennett, Charlie Binks, Lexus Wharekawa, Kobe Anthony, Liam Franklin, Nathan Morshead and cox; Shelby Cuff, coached by Fiona Bassett, rowed significantly faster as the day progressed to win their Final.

Lake creator 'man before his time'

http://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/9357871/Lake-creator-man-before-his-time

TRACY MILES                     04/11/2013

Max Smith, the project engineer for the Upper Waitaki Hydroelectric Power Scheme in the 1970s, and creator of the South Island's top rowing venue, Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel, died on 1.11.13.

A civil engineer by trade, Mr Smith went to Twizel to put into practice the National government "Think Big" policy, including a series of dams and canals across the Mackenzie Basin.

His legend lives on in the form of Lake Ruataniwha's international rowing course. Now central to rowing in New Zealand and an important sporting venue for the region, it was also the project that got him sacked.

Unknown to some of the heads of the Ministry of Works, as well as building the reservoir, Mr Smith was also turning Lake Ruataniwha into a community asset.

His daughter, Pip Sutherland, said: "Max was very pragmatic. If he decided he was going to do something, he did it."

"I think he felt that a lot of people thought the dams left nothing for the community at the end of it." So he decided to do something about that.

Mr Smith told the Timaru Herald in 2008, "it would be fair to say ... some were a little surprised."

Some of his bosses were keen to prosecute him under the Public Works Act after it came to light but in the end a compromise was met where he chose to retire. Mr Smith also had to spend two years fighting the government and his superiors to retain Twizel. His vision, 25 years later, sees a thriving town and rowing complex. Mrs Sutherland remembers the family's years at Twizel from 1970 to 1982. She said her father also made sure there were trees and picnic areas around Lakes Aviemore and Benmore.

After losing his job, he and wife Velda spent the next eight years developing their farm, Castle Hill Station. Having been born and bred in rural Waddington near Christchurch, Mr Smith was used to rural life. He had his 60th birthday at Castle Hill. After that, they bought a farm called Sandhurst at Weka Pass and later moved to a 121.4 hectare property at Waipara where he grew pinot gris and pinot noir grapes. Using a contract winemaker, the result was sold under the label Whitestone Wines. The couple retired to Amberley where he remained active until the middle of last year. He had been in Holmwood Resthome, Rangiora, since January.

Mrs Sutherland said Mr Smith was a good father and as children they had lots of camping holidays. "He was very probably a man before his time. He had great ideas, he loved young people and being able to help young people. His legacy made him a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) and earned him a Queen's Service Medal, among other awards.
